OUR MISSION
Connecting the Americas through Translation
Améfrica Press’ mission is to challenge the boundaries of language and geography as a way of embracing diversity across the Améfricas. We are a press that connects the Hemisphere through translation. The name Améfrica Press is inspired by the work of the Brazilian Black Feminist scholar and activist Lélia Gonzalez. Gonzalez developed the term Améfrica Ladina, to show how the lives and experiences of African and Indigenous peoples are foundational to the histories and cultures of the Americas.
OUR HISTORY
Améfrica Press Founder, Publisher, and Editor-In-Chief, Tanya L. Saunders, Ph.D., a native of Baltimore, Maryland is a writer, scholar, and educator. During a conversation with professional translators in Brazil, Dr. S mentioned the gap in translating underrepresented communities. The translators talked about their hope to change the ethics surrounding translation. Dr. S began Améfrica Press in 2021 to address the lack of diversity in publishing as it pertains to translation across the Americas - with an eye towards the ethics of translation as a restorative process.
