An experience from the Maré Complex: Andreza Jorge examines feminist movements from inside Rio's favelas, drawing on her own life in Nova Holanda. She argues that mainstream feminist discourse has largely overlooked the lived realities of Black and Afro-Indigenous women in Brazil's poor communities, where the legacies of colonization and slavery compound inequality across gender, race, class, housing, and education.
Through what she calls "corporeal escrevivência" — writing rooted in embodied, witnessed experience — and a case study of the Mulheres ao Vento dance project, Andreza develops the concept of favelado feminisms, foregrounding women's agency, community bonds, and ancestral ties as sources of resistance.
